Truth be told, I was a solar skeptic until this year. You see, I had been casually following the evolution of solar for about the last ten years. Toward the beginning of that period—when the common aesthetic was blueish panels framed in shiny aluminum—I was not very enthused. I liked the concept of net metering incentives, but variables such as cloud cover always caused me to wonder, “Is breaking even on the large up-front investment of a solar system possible?”
Then came the dawn of solar + storage, which really piqued my interest (i.e. Tesla’s Power Wall debut in 2015), but… too novel and expensive at the time for me to fully buy into the idea.
As time passed, I noticed panels looking sleeker, systems being designed smarter, battery warranties extending longer, and the overall cost coming down. Finally, after reexamining a decade’s worth of advancements and seeing solar as the clear winner for future-proofing my own family’s home energy, I became a believer.
Other factors that persuaded me were:
- The 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit eligible to any homeowner who owns their system and has income tax liability (new as of 2022)
- Being introduced to the brilliance and reliability of the Enphase product line (discover here)
At this point, my only barrier to going solar is that I am currently a renter. Lord willing, if and when we do settle into a home of our own, outfitting it with the latest solar tech will be top of the improvement list.
